Cookies
This page explains how Quill Vault uses cookies and browser storage. I write it in plain Singapore English because consent should be understandable, not buried. There is no analytics programme here, no ad network, and no social widgets — only the mechanics needed to remember your map preference and keep pages readable.
What cookies are
Cookies are small text files your browser stores when a site asks it to. They can remember settings between visits. Local storage is similar but lives entirely in your browser; I mirror consent there for speed.
What I use
Essential — always on. Keeps basic preferences such as whether JavaScript enhanced the layout. Without essentials, the site still reads, but the banner may reappear because nothing remembers your choice.
Functional / embedded content — includes Google Maps iframes on every page. On Quill Vault I classify maps as functional and keep them visible even if you reject optional categories, because orientation is part of reading a neighbourhood blog. Reject all still records your choice for analytics (off) and documents functional as false in storage, but maps remain available with disclosure here — a different approach from sites that hide maps until you opt in. I state that clearly so you are not surprised.
Analytics — off by default and unused. The toggle exists so the panel is honest if I ever add privacy-respecting statistics later. Today it changes nothing because no tracker loads.
Google Maps specifically
Each page embeds a neighbourhood map centred on Pasir Ris, Tampines, or Simei without an API key. When the iframe loads, Google may receive technical data such as IP address and referrer. I do not receive Google's analytics from those embeds. Maps are functional content, not advertising.
Cookie name and format
Name: sg_blog_consent. Mirror key: cookie_consent_v1. Value is JSON URL-encoded, version 1, with fields essential, functional, analytics, and timestamp. Max-Age about 180 days (six months), Path=/, SameSite=Lax, Secure on HTTPS.
Your controls
On first visit a bottom strip offers Accept all, Reject all, and Customise. Customise opens toggles; Save writes your choice to cookie and localStorage and hides the strip. Choices should persist across reloads and across pages until expiry or manual clearing.
How to clear cookies in your browser
In Chrome: Settings → Privacy and security → Delete browsing data → Cookies. In Firefox: Settings → Privacy → Cookies and Site Data → Manage Data. In Safari: Settings → Privacy → Manage Website Data. After clearing, the banner returns so you can choose again.
Relationship to Privacy
The Privacy page covers email, post, and server logs. This page covers browser storage only. Both belong to a personal blog without corporate infrastructure.
